Community Resource Report: School of Engineering Discovery Days (yearly event)

by Kevin Miller & Meredith Barrett

What: Once a year, the School of Engineering hosts an open house featuring its facilities and allowing community members to engage in science activities that are hard to duplicate at home or in the school.  Where else can you walk across a swimming pool of a non-newtonian fluid, ride an earthquake table, or attempt to build the cheapest and strongest beam and actually test it in a machine capable of applying thousands of pounds of pressure?

How: for groups larger than 10 and arriving by school bus, you must register on the website.  The 2010 Discovery Days are April 23 (for grades 4 through 8) and 24 (high school, colleges, and pre-majors).  Technically, anyone can go to either day.

Why:
1. The school is rich in science equipment and resources and the engineering students usually do a great job creating and presenting over 100 activities, demonstrations, and experiments for attendees.

2. It is a great chance for ALL your students to be engaged with and motivated by the STEM disciplines.
